Nails near my toes always used to be a real pain. My nails were thick, chunky and looked unattractive, no matter what I tried. This is when I decided that I was going to do something about my condition, no matter what it took. Here is how I changed my life:
I started by doing research on the condition itself. It is normal for nails to become dry and brittle when they become old. But, if the problem is something that has plagued you for a long time, your nails may be too brittle and dry. There are many reasons why this might be happening and the best thing I did was find out the reason behind it.
My nails had begun to crack when they became too dry. I began to drink more water – about eight glasses a day. When you're thirsty, your body starts to use the water it has accumulated in your system for energy. When you're thirsty, your blood sugar level will rise – and this means that your body will produce more insulin, which is a stimulant.
Your blood sugar level will cause your cells to release insulin, which in turn allows you to absorb glucose from food much faster. So, your stomach will start to make more insulin to replenish lost glucose. And then you drink more water – eight glasses a day. The more water you drink, the more your bloodstream will become saturated with glucose. That is what causes the dark circles under your eyes.
The key to all of this is simply increasing the amount of water you drink – the recommended amount is about a quart a day. Yes, I did drink a lot of water. Eight glasses a day! I did it for about three weeks and my nail condition cleared up. I was amazed at how well it worked. I haven't noticed any further cracking or drying of my nail.
You can't do all of this just by drinking water. It helps, but it isn't enough. You have to take action, as well. Get plenty of exercise, drink lots of water, and eat healthy foods.
One of my favorite foods is oatmeal. Why? Because it contains magnesium – which is necessary for healthy nails. Magnesium also helps in burning fat. So, if you want to trim your nails and keep them looking great – drink some oatmeal. And, it will taste good too!
Here's something you may not be aware of. Tea tree oil is very effective in killing infection – that's what fights against them in your nails. So, apply some tea tree oil on your nails every day. You can even use it as often as you like. Just don't touch it to your open cuticles.
Don't forget to avoid the use of acrylic nails. These nails are not natural and they are definitely not safe to work with. You can get cuts, chips, and pits in these artificial nails. If you do happen to accidentally nick a chip – call your nail tech right away to have him or her change it for you.
