Here’s What No One Tells You About Nail Polish Remover | Nail Polish Remover

One of the least favorite ways to get rid of nail polish is with a nail polish remover. Many people are very sensitive when it comes to having their hands “sober.” When they have just had their manicure or pedicure, there is a tendency for them to feel a strong, sometimes painful, sense of cleanliness from their fingertips and under the nails. This often leads to them using nail polish remover as a means of removing the excess polish so that they can feel more in control with their hands.

One of the best ways to safely remove nail polish with a cotton ball is to apply the cleaner onto a cotton swab and begin to rub the product into the nails with the swab. This works because nail polish remover has a solvent that keeps the product in solution and also evaporates to help you dry the nails to a soft, healthy finish. You simply repeat the process until the product has been removed entirely.

If you choose to try this method, however, it is important that you take care of your hands and do not rub too hard. Wipe the area with a clean absorbent cloth so that any excess product is removed. If the area still feels a bit too much, you can try rubbing alcohol on the spot or using a dab of petroleum jelly on a cotton ball to cover the scrape. To completely clean the area, wipe the cloth with alcohol again and let it air-dry before moving onto a new spot. If you have multiple polish jobs that you need to get rid of, you may want to try using a combination of products.

The most commonly found types of nail polish remover are nail polish remover products that contain acetone and other chemicals. Although the active ingredient may be the same – acetone – most of these chemical agents are considered flammable. Although it is legal in some states to use these products without a license, it is strongly discouraged to attempt to use them around open flames or open flame sources as the chemicals tend to discolor nails. Keep in mind that the solvents used in these chemical solvents can also discolor clothing and hair.

Another type of acetone-based nail polish remover is the acetone-based paint thinner. This is a less toxic but still potentially dangerous chemical that you should carefully read and follow the directions for use carefully. Using these products around open flames or open flame sources and the solvents contained within them could lead to serious skin or eye burns, damage to hair and skin, or even death. These removers are not meant for applying to nails but are safe to use on acrylic and vinyl nails that are thinned by acetone.

The third type of strong solvent that you can find in the nail polish remover aisle is the spray antiperspirant gel. This product is similar to the acetone alternative; however, the gel has no toxic components and comes in a spray bottle similar to the gel. This product works similarly to a hairspray that holds back moisture, and it is applied with a wide-toothed comb to the area to be treated. This method of application may work to temporarily relieve any symptoms that may be caused by chipped or damaged skin, but these products should only be used as a last resort.
