Stiletto's were designed in the late 19th Century by a woman called Ida van Gogh. She wanted to improve her career and so started designing miniature paintings that she would apply to her nails. Although she did not use a needle and using paint was new, it was the way she designed the Stiletto's that really created the look. Now we know what to call the Stiletto nail art and have even come back into fashion with more modern styles.
Before applying any Stiletto's or nail polish remember your nails will be more prone to stain and moisture from your hands and skin. This means daily maintenance is required to keep them looking their best. The first thing you need to do is remove all the current polish and get your nails trimmed. Next wash them with alcohol and then apply a base coat of lacquer. Finally, top off with the Stiletto nail colour of your choice. Some colours will be thicker than others so experiment to find the right Stiletto nail colour.
When applying the Stiletto's always begin with the base coat and then add the Stiletto's over this. Be careful as some Stiletto's can slide down your nails or be tricky to use. When applying the Stiletto's take great care and make sure you cover each and every nail with a good amount of Stiletto and then allow to dry fully. You must then fill any gaps left by the Stiletto's with more Stiletto's. Never cover the Stiletto's of a neighbouring nail as this will cause it to chip.
After your nails have been properly treated and cleaned you can apply a finishing coat. For the best results use a high quality Stiletto finishing lotion and a good hand cream. Once this has dried thoroughly, you can apply a top coat to protect your nails from water, sunlight and other environmental damage. It is important that you allow the nail to dry thoroughly between layers of application, if possible. If you are using artificial nails always apply a top coat of protection to stop them from becoming damaged.
Stilettos can be very stylish at the same time look very feminine and for many years they have been a very popular choice among women. As with most fashion trends they have moved out of the main stream but they are still very much in demand. Depending on your height and style of shoes you will most likely find yourself wearing a different style of Stiletto nail most days of the week. Whether worn with skinny jeans, skirts or dresses they can really add a certain wow factor to your outfit. There are even occasions where you can wear them to work instead of wearing your standard heels to meet your clients!
